So this is about, eh – 4 or so months in the making.
Back in June, I was fortunate enough to run the Runner’s World Heartbreak Hill Festival – Hat Trick – 3 races in 2 days – what a wonderful weekend it was. On that Saturday, I ran the 10k, post 5k, and ended up starting next to someone in a November Project shirt. At this point in the summer, I was just getting back into the swing of things with November Project, so I didn’t recognize this guy, whom I came to find out was Jonathan. We got to talking though, through the first half of the 10k (until he blew me away!), and I found out all about Energy Bits – something very new to me at the time.
At this point, I had really only heard about Energy Bits from a few blogs, but I in the back of my head knew that it was something I NEEDED (maybe a little strong), to try out. I’ve always had issues with hydration / nutrition during races. As most of my good friends/family know, I’m definitely an
A+eater unhealthyish eater. While I don’t do much snacking, I am always one to go for the carbs/pasta/fried food, when eating out, which is never, probably 75% of my meals. I can remember my roommates in college countless times just asking me how I could put certain things in my stomach, at any hour of the day. I think I should consider this a gift, since I don’t have to worry about much, but I do have to worry when it comes to my fueling regimen. Generally, I am fine with whatever I eat before I run, but often struggle to actually eat if I’m trying to eat before my 5/5:30 AM workouts.
This is where Energy Bits comes in. After our great run chat, Jonathan from Energy Bits, offered to give me a sample of the Bits to try out and review.
First Reaction (as experienced by most) – EWWW – ALGAE!
When I opened the bag of bits, I felt like I was smelling fish, but nevertheless, I popped 30 into my mouth with a couple of ounces of water, about 15 minutes before my run, and went out. I new as soon as I went out for the run, that I could definitely feel these having a direct effect on my stamina based on the following items:
1. It was a little chilly out and my upper body was literally warmer (good and bad – more on that in a later post)!
2. I hadn’t eaten anything else pre-run, and when I usually have my hunger pains, there were NONE.
3. I generally didn’t feel worn down when I got back from my run.
After one run, these were definitely proving to be successful in my book. I was having zero stomach pains post run, wasn’t hungry, and definitely was not as tired post run – all great things for the amount I’ve been running this summer.
While that first run was a short run, I then proceeded to take these out and use the same technique for much longer runs (10, 12, 18 miles), and was seeing the same great results. Mixing these with the normal fuel I take during a long run (Gu, powerade chews, etc.), has also proved to work very well. In the past, I have found myself barrel-ed over after long runs and races, not able to move/eat for hours. Through this past training cycle, with the help of bits, I didn’t experience this once. I was able to bounce back from my long runs successfully, and keep going with my days.
One thing to note, I mentioned earlier that I felt like I was getting heated up from these bits, and didn’t know exactly how my body was reacting to them. Since all people are different, I sent this question to Jonathan, and he suggested reducing the number of bits I take at one time. I now only take 20 bits before every run, no matter what distance, and it seems to work much better.
Overall, I would highly highly highly recommend the Energy Bits, especially if you are someone who has troubles with fueling for any distance of run. I have definitely seen huge results with the help of the Bits, and will continue to take them before every run. I can’t wait to get my hands on some of the Recovery Bits, to give those a test run as well, and even to try to add the Energy Bits into my fueling routines during a run.
